According to Republic Act No. 8972 also known
as the “Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000”,
a solo parent who has rendered at least 1 year of service and has a valid Solo
Parent Identification Card is entitled to 7
days of parental leave with pay, or more commonly known
as solo parent leave, per year. It is a leave benefit granted to solo parents
to perform their parental duties and responsibilities where physical presence
is required. Unused parental leave benefits are not convertible to cash
and cannot be accumulated.
Child refers to a person living with and dependent
on the solo parent for support. He or She is unmarried, unemployed, and below
eighteen (18) years of age, or even eighteen (18) years old and above but is
incapable of self-support because he/she is mentally- and/or physically-challenged.
